Description
From the Tim Stead workshop a matched pair of burr elm tables made by Ross Purves in 2010 . All products made by Ross Purves are commissioned pieces and are highly collectable and these tables are made from a large single piece of elm tree and as such are very rare. These examples shows the craftsmanship and attention to detail which has gained Ross the admiration and reputation as a significant artist in his own right with many pieces now on permanent exhibition in Scotland.
Tim Stead (1952 -2000) was an important furniture maker environmentalist poet and sculptor who saw the intrinsic beauty of wood and recognised that burr elm could and does look spectacular. It had invariably been discarded as flawed in the past before Tim made a feature of the many patterns formed in the grain. Back filled with bronze resin,
The surface is glass smooth, durable and is so pleasing to the eye.
This pair fits together or stands alone showing the structure of the tree and unless humanity gets tired of wood will last for centuries as a reminder that wood is a resource we should cherish and touch to connect with nature. Having these pieces in our shop has given us enormous pleasure.
